The more I learn about Africa, the more my heart aches for it's people and the land they hold dear. There are movies, videos, new articles and TV documentaries that guide you to what they want you to see but nothing prepares you for the moment you meet someone that lives things day to day.
I had no intention of painting this subject but painting is more of a meditative thing for me. I truly don't know what I'm going to create until I create it. (Unless of course there is a commissioned piece that was asked of me.)
When the red was placed on the canvas, it became what it needed to in the moment. With the recent death of Nelson Mandela and the chance meeting of my dear friend Ray who resides in Africa, this piece marks an important time in my life.
